NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY

Located in the western wing of the Jerónimos Monastery, the National Archaeological Museum has established itself as the main national archaeological museum in Portugal.

Founded in 1893 by an initiative of José Leite de Vasconcelos, the Museum has acquired over more than a century the reputation as a reference institution of Portuguese Archaeology, through regular correspondence with museums, universities, and research centers around the world.

The National Archaeological Museum presents the initial collections of its Founder and of Estácio da Veiga, to which are added, for example, the archaeology collections of the former Portuguese Royal House, archaeology collections from the former Fine Arts Museum, and others donated by private individuals or friends of the museum, such as Bustorff Silva, Luís Bramão, Samuel Levy, among others.

In addition to these exhibitions, the Museum provides society with other services with completely different themes, such as regular publications (of which the scientific journal "O Arqueólogo Português" (The Portuguese Archaeologist), published since 1895, stands out), conservation and restoration of archaeological assets, seminars, conferences and specialty courses, educational and cultural extension services, and several relevant activities.

If you want to know more about Archaeology in Portugal, or about this theme, schedule your visit to the Museum now and don't miss this opportunity to learn a little more about our History and traditions.

Cool Tip: After visiting the museum, why not stop by the Tropical Botanical Garden? One of the largest gardens in Lisbon, it has more than 600 species of exotic trees and plants from the most diverse tropical regions of the world, making it the ideal place for a peaceful stroll.
