It defines itself as "the smallest beer museum in the world, but also the proudest of them all" and we understand why as we visit it.

Museu da Cerveja is more than a museum. It is divided into two areas - the museum and the brewery (with terrace) – and does not belong to any company. It is an independent initiative, and everything we find here is duly certified by experts and/or the breweries themselves. On the upper floor, where the museum is located, a 16th century monarchy cellar is recreated.

Promoting Portugal in an original way is the mission of Museu da Cerveja. All the beers we find here are Portuguese or from Portuguese-speaking countries. Among labels, bottles and brewing utensils, here you can learn the history of this drink; there are many centuries of brewing to explore. Did you know that the drink appeared in Portugal through the monks, who, thanks to this drink, kept themselves warm and fed during their fasting hours? Or, for example, that the Mayas and the Inkas already consumed beer? It is true!

Hearing fado – nothing could be more Portuguese! – a visit to this museum in Terreiro do Paço is not complete without a visit to the brewery. Whether on the terrace or in the indoor room, and now that you know the history of this drink, relax and have a beer – this is the right time (and place) for that, because the museum ticket includes a tasting.

Cool Tip: Try, also, a pastel de bacalhau (codfish cake) with cheese from Serra da Estrela, also a very Portuguese combination.
