Museu da Água

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WATER PATH

Curiosity led us to the Barbadinhos Steam Pumping Station, inaugurated in 1880, the headquarters and last section of Museu da Água (Water Museum) to be built.

This building was responsible for supplying the upper areas of the city and its environment is reminiscent of a 19th century industrial plant. This is a clear reference for Industrial Historical Heritage. Did you know that Museu da Água still preserves the old steam engines? That's right – and they are still working!

The Barbadinhos Steam Pumping Station highlights the importance of water through a set of permanent exhibits that focus on themes such as the presence and pollution of water on the planet, the hydrological cycle, the history of water supply in Lisbon, and the way the museum's historical heritage used to work.

Here we travel into Lisbon's past, where each visitor will be able to understand the influence of the water supply for the expansion of the city. It will definitely be an adventure that will please all ages.

Cool Tip: After visiting the Barbadinhos Station, you must also discover Águas Livres Aqueduct, Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, and Patriarcal Reservoir, all built between the 17th and 19th centuries.
