O Gabinete de Madame Thao

A journey through the art of paper

Sandrine, a French artist with Vietnamese origins, has exhibited her work in numerous contemporary art events in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and has been highlighted in some of the most prestigious museums in the world. When she moved to Lisbon, she felt the need to create a place of her own that would highlight her passion for paper, allow her to display contemporary art works, and combine her artistic vein with the knowledge she has acquired over more than twenty years in the field.

And this was how, in July 2021, O Gabinete de Madame Thao came into being. In its name, literally translated to “Madame Thao’s Cabinet”, Sandrine's taste for mystery and the exotic are connected, referring to her origins (Thao is short for Thu-Thao, her Vietnamese name), and highlighting the places where she has lived (France and Vietnam), as well as her current address (Portugal, of course).

In LX Factory, where everything is irreverent and charismatic due to a combination of styles and artists from the most diverse areas, Sandrine opened a hybrid place, distinct and very interesting for the concepts that it harmoniously brings together. O Gabinete de Madame Thao combines three areas that represent the path of creation of a new work: in the bookshop area, second-hand books (dedicated to art and social sciences) inspire us; in the stationary area, we find the most delicate drawing and painting materials (from paper of different weights and textures, handmade in countries like Vietnam, Mexico, India, Bhutan, or Nepal; to brushes, paints, notebooks, and pencils); and finally, in the gallery area, we are invited to appreciate the final result of paper projects created by artists carefully selected by Sandrine.

Over here, we feel welcomed and realize that the artist is dedicated body and soul to her project. Between intimate events that fill us culturally (lectures, social gatherings, short film screenings, and book presentations), workshops, art courses, and live art sessions, it is possible to enjoy O Gabinete de Madame Thao in multiple ways, learning more about Asian culture and the different types of art we find here.

Cool Tip: On the first Thursday of every month, part of the “LX Factory Open Doors” program, O Gabinete de Madame Thao promotes video or performing art events. Follow the project on social media and stay up to date with everything that happens around there!
