28 Café
Set in a historic part of the city, near the St. George castle, 28 Café is no ordinary coffee shop! It is a full-size replica of the famous tram 28 that besides letting us travel back in time to Lisbon's history, shows us how the city’s electric tram company came to be. All set for this trip?
There are 23 seats and 12 standing ones! Inspired by the model 330, everything was recreated to scale and with amazing perfection. The detail is such that, just like the original models, all the screw heads are perfectly aligned. The counter is the front part of the tram, where Nuno Brito (one of the space’s managers) assumes the role he has been dreaming about since childhood: brakeman. It was the childhood memories of when his father took him to a park in Monsanto that had a toy tram that motivated the idea for this space.
In partnership with Carris, the walls of 28 Café tell the historical evolution of this means of transportation. On display are boarding tickets, old passes and even one of the first brakeman licenses – a true delight for tourists, but also for the locals, to whom the tram means so much.
But it isn’t only history that makes up this coffee shop! It also serves up quick meals which, in addition to standing out for their excellent quality, are ideal for those who are visiting the beautiful area where 28 Café is located. The burgers are a success, especially the "Mediterranean" and the "Brakeman". You can also opt for salads or sandwiches, especially the famous "Toast 28".
And although tram 28 is a perfect replica, don’t worry, you won’t find any pickpockets here!
