Union Empanadas

South America in Lisbon

In 2017, after several years working as an architect, a profession that allowed him to travel the world, João returned to Lisbon and found a city that was growing year by year, a city which was full of life and tourists.

In a rather bold move, João rented a small store, while he was still not sure of which project he would embark on. João didn't want to go back to work as an architect - that was his only certainty - so he decided to listen to what tourists were saying about the city. He realized that the capital lacked a venue that offered a concept of simple and light meals.

It was while talking to an Argentinean friend that the idea came up: they had a familiar recipe for empanadas, and when crossing ideas, they realized that this could be a winning project. And so Union was born.

Located in the heart of Lisbon, Union's first store had no space inside, serving meals through a window. However, it was so successful that it didn't take long for the second store to open, just a few meters away from the original. The second store is set in an old bakery, the venue preserves the building's original counter, floor, and ceilings.

At Union, Lisbon mixes up with South American flavors. From classic veal empanadas and cheese and spinach empanadas to the traditional Portuguese “bifanas” (with a secret twist), the variety ensures that there is something for everyone who passes by - always bearing in mind the artisanal and familiar process of the recipes and service, of course. To side your meal, the refreshing Erva Príncipe or Lemongrass juices are a winning bet. And for those who can't resist a sweet treat, Union also offers traditional Argentinean cookies: the “Alfajores”.

The name also has a meaning. “Union” represents the multiple nationalities of those who get their hands dirty (on the dough!) to present this Lisbonite project: João, Portuguese; his American ex-wife; and his Argentinean friend.

Fantastic flavors, impeccable service, and convenient location are the (not so secret) ingredients for this recommendation, that we couldn't fail to make. If you haven't tried these empanadas yet, what are you waiting for?

Cool tip: A few minutes walk from Union, you will find the Miradouro do Castelo de São Jorge. Surely the view over the city of Lisbon will be the best choice to relax after lunch.
