York House

a cozy house in the center of Lisbon

Although it is located right in the center of Lisbon, York House is a true haven in the bustling city. This house is part of the Marian Convent. The stay begins with a surprising climb of the amazing stone staircase, during which you’ll come across trees, flowers and plants, ending up on an unexpected patio. In this courtyard you can relax on a garden bench, read your newspaper, sip a glass of white wine or enjoy one of the house’s famous burgers.

York House is rich in people and stories. Over time, their owners have been English, Portuguese, French... But, it is in 1931, with the French Goldstein couple that the great history of York House truly begins. The couple’s love and dedication is still apparent in the house’s current values: proximity, friendliness and genuine smiles are privileged. Here we feel welcome.

The name York comes from the origin of the old owners – Yorkshire. Anabela, who is responsible for York House, has been part of this 'home' for over 30 years. Like her, there are 20 more employees, such as Luísa, the receptionist, or Mr. Joaquim Boiça, from maintenance. A dedicated family, which makes sure guests feel completely at home.

With 33 rooms, York House offers a variety of distinctive accommodations: some rooms are more classic, with furniture selected by Lucien Donnat, renowned decorator and Madam Goldstein’s nephew; others are more modern and accommodate design pieces with more contemporary lines.

Anabela gave us a room that turns out to be a compromise between both styles. White and ample, room 208 stands out because of its two loveseats by the window, overlooking the Tejo River. From here, you can see ships afloat on the river and seagulls flying high above.
The diverse breakfast served in the York House courtyard offers fresh bread, homemade jams, boiled eggs, bacon, fresh juice, and a little bit of everything that a great breakfast requires. If you stay here, you will definitely feel the York House love – a welcoming place, as a home should be.
