Esplanada da Mata

Mother Nature in the heart of Lisbon

Jorge Saúde took advantage of a bad moment in his professional career, the lack of jobs in his line of work, Childhood Education, to create an excellent project – the Esplanada da Mata.

In December 2011, he visited the Mata de Alvalade, officially known as the José Gomes Ferreira Park, and fell in love with this ugly duckling, which was actually an empty and cold park. He decided to apply for the concession of a kiosk in this space and thus proceeded to create the Esplanada da Mata. Without any experience in the restaurant business, it was a process of self-learning that ended up in such sweet results as fruit juices, refreshments and, for those who also want to grab a bite to eat, the toasted sandwiches in extra-large Alentejo bread.

With a very natural decor that fits right in with the location – full of tree trunks that were salvaged from a storm by Jorge himself – this place has become one of the coolest in Lisbon and is the perfect spot to unwind and relax amidst nature. Surrounded by vegetation and inhabited by several species of birds, here you’ll feel totally connected to Mother Nature.

If you are young, you’ll love this place for hanging out with friends. If you have children, you'll love having a drink at the kiosk while your child plays in the neighboring park. If you have pets, they too will love this space. So, there’s basically no excuse not to visit!

The terrace also has its cultural side: there is always a DJ or concert.
